Irakli Gamrekeli was born in Gori, Georgia, in 1984. During 1911-1917, he was studying at Tbilisi Theological Seminary. Artistic education he acknowledged at art courses at the First Classical Gymnasium. He was also studied at Sklifosovsky  Painting and Sculpture  School.

From 1920 Irakli Gamrekeli was actively involved in artistic life of Tbilisi, he participated in Georgian artists exhibition and by that time, Gamrekeli interested in Modernism.  One of the most well-known Georgian futurist magazines H2SO4 was designed by him together with other modernist artists. Irakli Gamrekeli is one of the founders and reformatories of Georgian Avant-Garde scenography. He was working with Kote Marjanishvili and Sandro Akhmeteli. The most famous performances designed by him are: Shakspare’s “Hamlet” and “Othello”, Sandro Shanshiashvili's “Anzor”, Grigol Robakidze’s “Lamara”, Friedrich Schiller's The Robbers  and etc.

Artworks by Irakli Gamrekeli are stored in different museums, galleries and private collections.
