Avto Varazi was born in 1926 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He was studying at the Faculty of Architecture at Tbilisi Technical Institute in 1943-1948. He continued postgraduate studies in Art History and Theory in 1948-1951. Avto Varazi is the first Georgian non-conformist artist, who experimented and established collage technique in his artworks.


During several years, artist was working as an exhibition designer for the archeological exposition at Georgian Historical Museum. He was invited as a set designer for the movie “Pirosmani” (directed by Giorgi Shengelaia), he also performed a main role in the movie. 


Artworks by Avto Varazi are stored in different museums in Georgia and abroad, among the most important institutions are Modern Art Museum, New York, USA; Zimmerli Art Museum, New Jersey, USA; Georgian National Museum. Also his artworks are displayed in different regional museums in Georgia (Kutaisi, Tsageri, Ambrolauri, Senaki Fine Arts Museums) and his work are also kept in different private collections.
