Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi was born in Kvareli, Georgia in 1889. During 1909-1915 he was studying at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. His teachers were A. Arkhipov, A. Vasnecov and N. Kasatkin. After returning to Georgia, he moved to Kakheti and he was teaching painting in Telavi.  During 1915-1916 he was cooperating  with newspaper “Sakartvelo” (Georgia) and was publishing his caricatures there. Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi created different series of genre and allegorical paintings. He was also working in book design and illustration. During 1925-1943 he was working at Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. From 1938 he was a professor at the Academy. From 1922 until 1935 Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi was working as a set designer. He created design for “Daisi”, first opera performance by Zaqaria Paliashvili in 1923. He also designed Kote Mikaberidze movie “My Grandmother” together with Irakli Gamrekeli in 1929. He was awarded as an honoured Georgian artist in 1940. 

Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi is an important Georgian modernist artist. His creative work connects individual artistic expression and interpretation of national forms. 


Artist’s works are stored in different museums (Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi History Museum (Karvasla), Georgia; State Museum of K. Marjanishvili Theatre, Tbilisi, Georgia;  State Museum of Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli Theatre, Georgia, etc.) and private collections.
